Fresh Hell is a darkly comic novel for any adult young enough to embrace high tech and old enough to fear its unfettered future. It is social sci-fi in the tradition of futurist classics, such as Fahrenheit 451, A Clockwork Orange, and Logan’s Run. But Fresh Hell’s frightening world is in the here and now.
At age fifty-five, Merrit Kinder's midlife crisis becomes a crash. The widow's struggling to make enough money (and meaning) to survive, in a profession she no longer loves. Apparently on a whim, she sabotages her business. Worse, she can’t make herself care. She soon stumbles on signs of a pervasive, hidden evil and becomes obsessed with exposing it. But it’s only the ruse of obnoxious captors, super-tech masters of nanodevices implanted over time to control Merrit, who finally make her aware of their presence and purpose. It's a United States government effort to perfect protection for citizens against enemies who'd do worse, they insist. But what could be worse? Merrit looks the same as ever, yet she’s owned and operated by people who don’t like her any more than she likes them. Or do they? Their alternately cruel and kind ways are dizzying, and their ultimate goal is a mystery. What's certain is that they love showing Merrit exactly how and why they’re "essential to survival and the end of everything worth living for." And they're taking her along on their ride to freedom's end.
Fresh Hell’s light tone and fast pace help it deliver a serious punch the reader is too entertained to see coming. And its science is far from absurd The respected Lifeboat Foundation’s NanoShield Proposal warns of inhalable nanodevices that invade the human nervous system, letting outsiders control what goes into it and what comes out.
Adult language.
Fresh Hell edition by J E Heath Literature Fiction eBooks
"Fresh Hell" by J.E. HeathThis is a great book by a new author in this genre - suspense, horror, humor, a little sci-fi; and topical too. The cover alone is worth the price.
For me it brings to mind collaboration between Anne Tyler and Stephen King - maybe "Ladder of Years" or "Earthly Possessions" meets "The Long Walk" or "The Langoliers".
But J.E. Heath has inserted a distinctive personality into the pages of the novel.
Two things I require in a good work of fiction - do you care what happens to the character(s) and does it provide imagery that allows you picture the scene without having to guess what is going on, e.g. - the main character leaving her driveway observes: "The tidy streets of her neighborhood, shaded by ancient oaks & elms, still held the nights cool breath, but the expressway was already sizzling".
If a book doesn't have that and more within the first quarter of the book, I pass it on.
Also, does it resolve whatever dilemma is at hand by the end - this one does. You'll find that we all have a little bit (or a lot) of Merritt Kinder, the main character, in all of us
Give "Fresh Hell" a try - you won't be disappointed.

Fresh Hell edition by J E Heath Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
In Fresh Hell, Merrit, a cynical, straight-shooting executive, tumbles from her position as a successful business woman into a world within herself where she struggles to maintain her sanity against the visions and trials that They use to control and test her. Her journey is bizarre and nearly painful at times, but impossible not to follow to its haunting conclusion. The writing is exquisite. The story is fantastic. And Merrit's struggles are passionate, gripping and all too human.
Fresh Hell is a must-read for any lover of dystopian fiction.
Masterfully adept at dialog and description, J.E. Heath lets us take a good long look at the dark side of obsession, tempered with humor. We see the so-likeable Merrit F-bomb her way out of a meeting and a career on the same day, and then we follow her into a strange encounter with a man selling magic marbles. Of course, Merrit cannot even fathom the terrifying potential these marbles have until she scans them into her computer and unlocks the scenes and (government and cultural) secrets they contain. That's the beginning of the bizarre, electrifying thought-voices that begin to control her days and nights. But exactly who or what is taking her over, and why? Is Merrit the subject and the object of some form of high tech extraterrestrial experimentation? Or suffering from a brilliant and kaleidoscopic form of schizophrenia? We are compelled to read on until we know. An amazing, riveting first novel by Heath who says "This book is autobiographical in the sense that I am paranoid about the possibilities of unfettered high tech controlling me--without my knowledge or consent." Will she give her consent, in order to travel farther in this alternate universe? Hmm. She reports that she is at work on a second book.
As dystopian (opposite of utopian) fiction, Fresh Hell is in the tradition of such futurist sci-fi as 1984, A Clockwork Orange, and Fahrenheit 451. But its scary world is in the here and now.
